“Don’t Cheat on Your Present with Your Future.” – Devon Patterson
This quote will probably never get old to me! I first heard it while chatting with one of my oldest friends at a recent wedding. I was asking the usual, “How’s life?” and “What’s next for you?”, questions of he and his wife, when he answered, “We’re just trying to focus on what God wants us to do in this season, you know? Kind of like, Don’t cheat on your present with your future.”
WHOA. EYE OPENER.
As soon as he uttered these words, I knew this was God speaking directly to me through him (as he did often). I realized I had been cheating on my present with my future for YEARS and I had only recently been trying, reluctantly, to settle into my current season of life.
I have always been that girl who feels like she should be accomplishing so much more than she is, so instead of embracing each season of my life, I constantly found myself trying to figure out how to rush into the next one. Before I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree, I had secured a post-graduate internship, so for the last semester of my collegiate tenure, I was already looking
forward to the internship. Then halfway through my internship, I got accepted into Graduate School, and ended up mentally checking out, ready to move to a new state and start school again. And yep, you guessed it, I did the same thing in Graduate School! I started counting down the days to graduation so I could hurry up, move back home and “start my life”. See, that was the issue for me in each season of my life. I acted as if I wasn’t able to start “living” until I reached the next season, because apparently, the current season was a mistake for me. But that was so far from the truth! Whether we are longing for something different in our lives or ready to take on a new opportunity, there is still purpose and meaning woven into our present season, we just have to be willing to embrace it. Hindsight, rushing into the next season always left me feeling like I had missed something in the previous season. Although a “season” is not meant to last forever, it is also not meant to be rushed through. God uses every single season of our lives to develop us into who he has created us to be.
Yes, even the tough seasons.
Every season has purpose. Every season has beauty. Every season is necessary. And when we rush through our seasons, we miss the lessons and so much more that God purposes for us to see in those moments.
Even though the deep desire of my heart is still for me to move back home, I’m embracing my current season and you guys, IT’S BEAUTIFUL! I’m learning that embracing my season doesn’t mean that I need to stop working towards turning my dreams into realities or to let go of my future desires, it simply means that I can’t forget to stop and see the beauty in my “right now”.
When I actually started taking the time to just be present and open my heart and eyes to see the wonderful people, places and things in this season, it seemed like God began to multiply the wonders. I’m growing and developing in ways I could not have imagined. I’m gaining clarity on who God is and what my purpose is. I’m connecting with some amazing people and the opportunities for me seem never-ending now.
So, I encourage you to start embracing your current season. If you are physically in a location you feel you are ready to move from, maybe embracing your season looks like exploring new places or attending networking events to connect with others in the area. If you’re at a job you are ready to leave, maybe embracing your season looks like actually putting 100% into your work and bringing a more positive and open mindset to your workplace each day. The most general way to embrace your season is to simply slow down, be still and practice awareness. Be more aware of the people, places, thoughts or even aspects of nature that you would normally breeze by. You’ll be amazed by what you discover.
