“If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you’ll never have enough.”
– Oprah Winfrey
Social media has been an amazing thing, without it things like this blog would never be possible along with the endless opportunity for connections. What about the bad side though? The side where everyone is trying to prove that they are on the same level or the one above the next person. People living beyond their means to make it look like they got it simply because their peers on social media have it.
The Real Truth…
I don’t personally know a single person who owns a house, car, other bills, and are taking trips outside of the county, on a regular. Yet if you look at the people I follow on social media, it is easy to find multiple people doing just that and so much more! However, this is not a reality for many people 18-25, probably even on up to 30 in some cases. I mean its nice and is definitely something to work towards but not at the expense of your lively hood.
See I personally want to be able to travel, want my dream wedding and can not wait to be in my career. I see all these people on social media living their absolute best life and doing those things. It’s tempting to be resentful of these people and jealous of what they have. However, that type of mentality would only block my own blessings. That song “What God has for you is for you” is something that i refer to when these thoughts creep up. We can’t have everything they have or everything we want yet because its either:
1. Not for you entirely
2. Just not your time yet
It is so easy to long for what others have and resent what we do have. The real issue with that is you don’t know what they went through to get to that spot, what losses they had to take. Viewing things like this and longing for them often causes us to lose sight of the things we are truly rich in like love and family. Causing us to become unhappy when we really have something another person would love to have.
This holiday season when you’re surrounded by family and friends (yes even the annoying ones) and receiving gifts (the ones that make you cringe too) remember those who don’t have those things and would give anything just to be in your spot.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and share 🙂
